"1"was written during one of the sessions with Ana El Hekaya workshop aboutwriting the Revolution. It is scheduled to be performed along with otherstories written in the workshop in a storytelling performance in Cairo sometime soon. "1" was inspired by my work in Laila Soliman's No Time forArt 0, which is the first part of a series of performances about military andpolice violence. NTFA 0 is dedicated to the martyrs of the Revolution."1" was born in a moment that brought together the blend betweenbrutal facts and the gift of our imaginations.

Abanoub had decided not to attendhis math lesson on January 25 to join the protests. He didn't see hissweetheart Eveline that day because of his decision; but he saw her on Thursdayat the biology class. After they finished, they stood together in the streetand then took a walk till they found a batata vendor. They stood eatingthe small grilled sweet potatoes in the cold, enjoying their taste and how theywarmed their fingers.

Abanoub told Eveline all aboutTuesday's demonstrations, and what happened at El Matareya Square when he wentthere with his friends instead of going to class.

They went around the square tillthey found 5 or 6 others and then they raised the flag and started chanting.Suddenly, they felt the presence of Security Forces more than before. Abanoubdid not tell Eveline that he was scared; he was scared of getting arrested orbeing beaten to death or something even worse than that. He couldn't evenimagine what could happen. He just stood there chanting, his heart poundingloudly and his voice rising and his fist shaking.

Hetold Eveline about the moment the Security Forces ran after them and he ran faraway to join, as he thought, another demonstration, and found himselfcompletely alone.

Evelinelaughed her squeaky laugh which Abanoub finds so funny. They finished the sweetpotatoes as they walked and he told her how they went after that to TahrirSquare and what happened later on. He told her about when he finally reachedTahrir, it was Egyptian soil, 100% Egyptian, without Central Security Forces orSecurity Police.

Hesang some of the songs the people sang that night in the Square as he walkedher home.

Hetold her not to go down the next day, because Friday would be really harsh –even if her father permits her. He asked her to pray at home or through thingsfrom the balcony or even chant from it.

"Chantfrom the balcony?", Eveline laughed hard. "What do I say if Ido?"

"Say'The people want to cancel El Thanweya El Amma exams' ", laughed Abanoub.

Atthe corner of the street before herhouse, Abanoub said goodbye to Eveline. He went to sit with his friends for awhile. They agreed on where to meet in the morning so they would be a largegroup after Friday prayers. He will tell his mother he is going to a class; shewill definitely not suspect him of lying. He could even go to Mass with her inthe morning before meeting his friends so that she would approve of him thatday, and nothing would harm him.

Abanoubtold Eveline right before he left her at the corner, "Don't be scared,everyone will go down tomorrow. We all have to. I feel that I have to finishwhat I took part in on Tuesday."

OnSaturday, June 11, Eveline sat for the Arabic and religion exams alone.

Kufuf - Palms

I carry your palms in mine. Icarry them in the hands I took from you

I carry them so your burden islighter

bags, suitcases and laundrybaskets

No hands can carry all that alone.

That's why we get married, theysay. Because no one can carry all this alone.

You're palms are still wrappedaround everything.

I carry your eyes in mine. My eyeswhich you gave me shaped like yours. I hold them in my eyes and I see a laughin black and white, broken china, a star small and far away.

Then I know that when we fall memust stand again. When someone blinds us, we put our hands forward to find apath.

Sweet rough sweat; the windows areshut and the glass panes are cold to the touch, a small stubborn sliver of abreeze passes through it to bring in a smell of everything in the street thatsmells like nothing at all, like air clean of anger, a smell that dissolvesquickly in the scent hidden in the details of the warm skin feeling like adelicate rug and sitting so comfortably in a perfume so intimate that hasescaped pores and rested in the coarse cracks in the wood of the table and the delicate planesof the floor as cool shy feet with the smallest hint of dried skin at the heelscrawl up to the quilt clumped with heat smelling of laundry and damp with theleft over taste of sweet sour grape drops that fell accidently, like the tastein the lukewarm morning breath brushing up against hair that scratches andtickles, damp with the wine at the tips and smelling of autumn and tobacco,that- along with the tips of a chiffon curtain flowing with the tiny breeze andtasting of edible dust – strokes the nooks to bring out another whiff of sweetrough sweat.

Hide and Seek

I seek you.

I do not know whether I seek youout, but I seek you. Does this make sense? What is the difference then? To seekyou out means from amongst a crowd. But there are no crowds between us.

Not really.

It's just you and me.

This is not a letter. This is astory I think, which would be easier to be told if I do not publish it under myname.

I will tell it pseudonymously. Butwhich name to use? Who am I as tell this story to paper? Should I just begin?

My indecisiveness might give meaway.

If I do seek you out (amongstpeople as we've agreed) then I have sought you randomly. We have found thesewords between us by chance.

I will begin randomly then. At anyletter.

Tea. Trust. Tentative. Table.Tobacco. Today. Tomorrow. Talkies.

I don't know where I am going withus. I started writing to tell a story, not ramble on. So I could put what Icannot say to you where you will never think to look. And even if you do, willyou know?

Change of voice.

She seeks him.

She seeks him out. He seeks her atmoments of fear, of loneliness, when her smallness resembles the tiniest threadto keep him from falling.

Or so she thinks.

Seeking is an act of terror.Beautiful terror. Blinding terror. Terror that strings two souls together foran instance and their bodies could not even be there.

She seeks him now. After she heardhis fingers trying hard to understand.

She did what he did. She passedunderstanding and followed the sound of steps, of fingers stroking, and soughthim out – even though he was alone.

The game of seeking requireshiding, and despite her size, she could not hide from him.

There was no room under the bed.The suitcase was too small. The rooms opened onto each other. The blinds weresee-through. And the cupboard – there wasn't one.

Why hide from the joy of seeking?

She doesn't trust him. She doesn'ttrust herself.

Tomorrow then.

And she seeks him out.

I seek you out as she does him.

I am afraid of the puncture, of theflow of blood, when they pass through. After needle and thread have passedbetween us – just a middle passage, no intention of sewing – we will bewounded. We will need to hide. To heal.

Then tomorrow.

Bandages will fall and we hide toseek again.

Again and again and again.

Another letter then, to put an endto this game.

Shit. This is what happens whenyou're not decided. I've just decided who I am now and I'm trying to figure outwhether Arabic fits in.

Why the hell not? Don't you alwayssay there is always the possibility? Never does not exist – that’s how Itranslate it. So maybe I could've learned some Arabic, wala eh? I could even goback while editing the story and stuff some Arabic words here and there. See,stuff. Like vine leaves and that oriental crap. Maybe crap is a bit modern forwho I am? You never know. You said "never" is inaccurate, but hereit's used with a possibility.

To be honest with you, I neverthought of me as a possibility for seeking. But the seeking is not sought,right? It just happens?

I just happen.

I do. I happened and now we'restaring at the thread going through us not knowing whether to cut it or justwait it out, at this very spot where it all began.

Carlos. Create. Cut. Cairo. Cotton.Come. Care. Comfort. Christ. Cream. Connotation. Carry. Cinema. Constrain.Camera.

I suddenly realized there are nowords in Arabic which can begin with a c.

Tomorrow then.

Soles will meet.

I'm so indecisive. Now, I don’t knowwhether to end this story here or keep it going?

I can’t even think of a properending.

Should the thread between thembreak? Should it tear by itself with time?

Maybe they should decide. Afterall, it is their story. I am just the messenger, who happens to have an elusivepen name.

I can guess, though.

Each will choose an ending – no.They will both choose the same ending but with a different interpretation. Thenthey will tug.

And in the tugging. Pulling.Pushing. Longing. Holding. Releasing. The thread will break.

After that…what will happen?

God knows. One story at a time.I'm only just beginning my writingcareer. Just let me wrap this one up, sign it and go out.

What will follow is the maddening rush ofthoughts and memories – like you can't stop the tap from running: what Ishould’ve done, what I didn't do.

I don't know how the hours passed – I canalmost hear the clock over the TV going berserk in agony, and you pleading, nolet this be 20 years from now, let it never come. Give me some time.

The telephone was off.

Prevent the dog from barking with the juicybone.

DoesYoshi know? Did he lose weight because the visits stopped? I wonder sometimesif he had barked at the sudden restlessness beneath him, whether anyone heardhim moan.

To begifted with such beauty, with such adoration.

Ilike to think of myself as a woman of myword.

Itwas not my word I have been breaking, it was hers.

Fortwo days now I have gone down without earrings. I never do.

I wasafraid my mommie would notice. My lack of adornment. If I walkquickly, she wouldn't notice what is missing between the curls.

Alaa Abd El Fattah is still in jail, even though GeneralTantawy has declared that investigations into the massacre of Maspero atOctober 9^th 2o11 have been moved to Civil Prosecution.

Alaa was the first who said it. We fear our mothers morethan bullets.

I am afraid and that is why I have not been wearing them.

I fear the terror at the pit of mother's heart crawling upto blind her from anything else other than what she wants, that we stay withher, that we will not go "there".

I lie. I break promises. I put up pretences.

I go.

I am afraid.

Tying the first watch I got – the one my mother gave me –her old watch, around my wrist, I look at the brown leather jewelry box whereearrings live.

I open it. I move my fingers through silver and stones.Gropping.

I remember last January's ends and the buds of February asI translated instructions for those braver than me. It was very specific.

Donot wear any kind of jewelry they can pull you from: necklaces, pendants, earrings, etc.

I don’t have studs.

And so, for the past days I have gone down with my earlobes naked.

I play around the small brown bedding where they lie tryingto find one to wear that matches my mission.

Then I ask myself, whose gift, whose love, do I want tosing in my ears if I die today?

Despite my cowardice and constant removal of myself fromharm's way, I play the game.

My grandmother's old silver earrings, which came to me as agift on my 12^th birthday.

The pearls I got from a circle of beautiful women the day Igot appointed at university.

The jade ones I made from the four honey stones KhaltooMona gave me before she left us.

Mother of pearl – 19^th birthday – from 4beautiful, now, women.

Yemeni jade set in Yemeni silver along 12 years.

I decided not to wear any. No studs, no rings. What if oneof those killing us ran after me for some reason and grabbed my from my earringand tore it out of my ear?

I would have another one of those. I would have totransform them.

Another one like the crescent lost in Alexandria's winter.

The Celtic design with silvery blue from my grandma'slands.

My mama's little sterling hear – rose quartz so soft –which now lies at my throat in a chain.

No earrings to Tahrir today, I decided.

As I breathed his long missed smell in the first half ofthe day, I didn’t need to reach up to my ears and feel empty.

He filled them with lapis lazuli and coral set in harmonyand meticulous detail of every minute he spent choosing them.

The taller, more cynical me.

The first time I went to Tahrir Square was with him.

Now, I tell him, "I will call you when I'mthere".

Things do go around in rings.

Everything does.

We start at a point and we end at the same point. But atthe point of ending we are no longer those who set off. We grow and we carry withus the fullness and the wholeness of a complete ring closing around an earlobe. And then we move on to the next ear, the next pair.

This time is different. We all know. This time we movecollectively. Together, past the borders of Tahrir Square, to reach itsfullness.

This time we will not shy of wanting to be complete.

This time we will remember.

Egyptians have never sung to crescents.

We've always sung for full moons.

The Truth at the Heart of the Square

This is something that has come to me as a conclusion, a fact, a truth, call if what ever you wish but this is it:

At Tahrir Square there is only Truth.

There is no more space for doubting this and nothing angers me more than the people I meet randomly who are still questioning. So much has happened - so much beauty has come from Tahrir - that I feel we can no longer question it.
Tahrir is a soul that is definitely divine and if you don't believe in divinity then it is the most beautiful of life that I have seen.

What has been happening since Friday late night and the early hours of Saturday 19th of November is nothing but a betrayal to the Egyptian people, to all of them, those with the Revolution and those against it.

The Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) is only continuing what Mubarak's regime has been doing for 30 years. The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has not changed its policy. For the past three days it has been killing the peaceful protesters and shooting at them with tear gas, live ammunition, rubber bullets and other types of small weapons - shooting at vital body areas like the head and abdomen. Not only that, but they pick up the stones and rocks which are the only weapons we have to throw them back at the people.

SCAF is supposedly in control of the country and they can't control the Riot Police? I doubt it. The Riot Police have orders from SCAF and the Military Police have joined in brutally beating the hell out of the protesters to empty the Square.

Now, Tahrir still stands. With lesser numbers but with more heart.

I fell asleep on Sunday night during one of my breaks from infront of the television and Twitter. Ahmed, one of my oldest friends, called me and woke me up; I hadn't spoken to him in months.

After short greetings I asked him, already sure of the answer where he was. "Tahrir", he said. I asked how things were going. He briefed me very quickly and then said, "I need to ask you something, its very important. I need to know from you, do you think it is right to be here? I need to know from you. Is it right?"

I remember feeling so drowsy and yet so certain when I said "Yes, it is right. There is no other right. Tahrir is always right".

How can it not be so? How can it be anything but truth?

When Ahmed Harara loses both eyes to the soul of Tahrir, how can it be other than right?

When the people at the front lines battling the security forces stay there for hours on end, breathing this gas, and keeping ground, how can this be other than truth?

When the people keep coming in, with food, medicine, blankets, and belief, then this can never be wrong.

The pharmacist we bought medicine from yesterday made us a 20% discount when he found out we were going to Tahrir. My sister's colleague tweeted that the cab driver who drove her to Tahrir wouldn't take money for the ride. Someone else retweeted a tweet about another cabbie who wouldn't take money.

No one wants to go to the Ministry, we are defending our Revolution and our rights and our country. We are defending Tahrir and our right to be there.

This is Tahrir, this is the beauty of Egyptians and this is why we are in the streets today and why we will
remain there till we breathe freedom.

مستمرين في الثورة

رجعنا تاني للتحرير، عشان لسو وبرغم مرور 10 شهور على تنحي مبارك المجلس العسكري والداخلية بيتعاملوا مع احتجاجاتنا بالدنطق نفسو، منطق العنف والسحل.

بدل ما المجلس العسكري يحل مشاكل مصابيين الثورة ويوفر لذم العلاج المحترم، استخدم القوة والأمن الدركزي لفض اعتصامهم السلمي، يعني مصابي الثورة يضربوهم بالرصاص والخرطوش في نفس الوقت إللي مبارك والعادلي فيو بيتعالجوا على نفقة الدولة أحسن علاج وهما في سجونهم.

في الحقيقة اللي بيحصل ده جزء من الثورة المضادة اللي بتتم بتدبير وتحريض وقيادة من المجلس العسكري، فبعد ثورة قامت عشان الحرية ولقمة العيش، بقى واضح إن في مخطط لعقاب الشعب عشان ماحدش يطالب بحقوا تاني؛

 أداء الداخلية والأمن في القمع والتعذيب زي ما ىو زاد عليو حالة من الانفلات الأمني المتعمد عشان الناس تحس بالفوضى ويبقى اللوم موجو باستمرار للثورة والثوار.
 الاقتصاد لسو منحاز للأغنياء على حساب الفقرا، والأسعار مافيش نية لضبطها، يعني بدل ما الثورة ترجع للناس حقوقها، الناس تزيد عليها الضغوط الاقتصادية ويحسوا إن الثورة جات عليهم بالخسارة.
 الإعلام الرسمي لسو بيشوه الحقائق وبيطلع المجرمين ضحية، وبيعمل كل حاجة عشان يشعلل الصراعات بين أطياف المجتمع ويلهي الناس عن حقوقهم ومشاكلهم.

يعني ببساطة المجلس العسكري لسو منفرد باتخاذ القرار، وبيتحرك في كل الاتجاىات إلا في الاتجاه الصح للثورة، وكل يوم المجلس العسكري بيستمر في السلطة بيبعدنا أكتر وأكتر عن اىداف ثورتنا وعن شكل المجتمع الجديد إللي بنحلم بيه.

إحنا موجودين في ميدان التحرير وفي كل ميادين مصر وشوارعها لغاية لما السلطة فعلاً تبقى للشعب، لغاية لما نبني نظام جديد يطلع من قلب الناس ويعبر عنا وعن

The air conditioned office was shaking at a two seconds interval every time the old brown York air conditioner burped some cool air.

Mubarak's picture was on the wall behind the desk. He looked like a teenager compared to the figure sitting in the dark chocolate brown leather armchair.

The whole room was dressed in this shade which grotesquely matched the old York dripping water through an orange hose into a lime green bucket.

Ghali lit a cigarette – Gauloises – and leaned forward while staring into the face hovering in midair between cap and collar. He opened his thin lips to say something but then changed his mind.

No, he thought, asking for whisky is not a very smart move. He'd already said he didn’t want anything to drink.

"Well, Mr. Ghali…"

"Please General Fangary, there's no need for these formalities. You can call me Mr. Waguih."

"Mr. Waguih"

"I'm all ears General."

"You do know why you're here"

"Actually Mohsen, I can call you Mohsen, can't I? I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing here."

"BUT you are the one who requested this INTERVIEW MR. Ghali."

"Please, there's no need for Ghali, this is as you say only a friendly interview. I did request this meeting but I only did so to hear what you have to say to me in person General."

The abrupt pause was broken with a moist burp from old York.

"I AM really confused Mr. Waguih. I DON'T HAVE anything to say to you."

"Come, come, you answer with an idle tongue Mohsen."

Fangary's eyes – enlarging – stared at Ghali through the thick smoke. The minute became two as Ghali enjoyed the last of his smoke and Fangary tried to understand what he had just said to him which made him so pleased with himself.

Ghali smiled as he put out his cigarette.

"General, your ridiculous – pardon my language but I can't find a more suitable word – interference in my life clearly shows you have something you want to ask me. So just go ahead, I'll be direct with you, I promise. I won't lead you on like those silly teenagers you send my way to know things about me."

The York cleared its throat.

"Mr. Ghali…the Supreme Council for ARMED Forces' position is not to be ridiculed. The Council is concerned with Egypt's safety ONLY"

"So am I Gen."

"Yes, yes however the Council will not STOP at ANYthing to protect EGYPT FROm anything."

"You've made that clear Gen."

"The COUNCIL will ALWAYS and FORever protect Egypt even if from Egyptians themselves."

"Oh for goodness' sake just spit it out Fangary"

"You are a THREAT, a potential one MR. GHALI!"

"Damn it, I thought I'd be a confirmed and dangerous threat General after all you're doing"

"This is national security Mr. GHALI. Do NOT Belittle it."

However, the most pressing is the fact that I am absolutely not a spy because I have no Facebook or Twitter account, nor do I carry a camera and I most certainly do not sit in any of those posh air conditioned coffee shops."

"This IS NOT A joke MR. GHALI. Egypt is GOING THROUGH A critical…"

"I'm not done yet Mohsen. My wife is an Egyptian. Her religion is her business, but if SCAF would be so impertinent so as to meddle into the citizens' private matters, she became a Copt when we were married. If you're also wondering about me, I don’t really give a rat's bottom about God, religion or even marriage, but its not so easy to get out of marrying a woman who's been your lover for over half of your life."

"MR. GHALI, this IS GONE …"

"You haven't done your homework Fangary. I have not given up my Egyptian nationality. It was stripped away from me because I am a communist."

"WE do not SAY this word in these offices MR. GHALI"

"Actually it’s a French passport and Swedish one as well. I've already told you Fanagary, I am not a spy and I go to Tahrir to protest because I am an ordinary Egyptian fellow who wants to overthrow the regime for a breath of democracy."

The York erupted violently. Fangary rose out of his chair and knocked over the small Egyptian flag on the desk.

He was breathing heavily; his face turned red, purple and yellow in a few seconds. He raised his right arm as he leaned with his left hand on the desk. His forefinger rose – an erection despite the rage – pink and swollen.

"Ghali…you…are…"

His laugh preceded his quick slim hand as he held Fangary's finger and put his arm down.

"Oh come one Fangary. It'll stick to you like a prostitute's reputation for faking orgasms. Do stop the fingery pointing"

He chuckled, proud of his borrowed joke, before he continued.

"Sit down man, take a few deep breaths, we won't argue over whether I've got an English or French passport."

Ghali pushed Fangary gently back into his Chair. He moved around to the side of the desk and picked up the flag and put it back where it was.

"THANK you MR. GHALI"

"Don't thank me General, no thanks between us. Do you mind, though if I take the flag? I'm quiet fond of its size."

"IT'S an Army possession Mr. Ghali…BUT…"

"Thanks mate Come on, let's have something to drink, you need a sip of something."

The General stared at Ghali as he rolled the small red, black and white flag around its pole and stuffed it in his shirt.

He swallowed twice, clenched a Parker pen in front of him before ringing the bell for the office boy. Half a minute later a young man dressed in kaki with cap and all was at the door.

"Yes, Sir. What do you need Sir?"

"I will have a Turkish COFFEE, no sugar. What will you have Mr. Ghali?"

"Double scotch, please, no ice. Thank you. It's not too early in the day to have whisky, is it?"

هي ليست خطوات كثيرة لكنها صعبة.

الوصول.

الوصول ليس بالبساطة و لا بالسهولة التي نتخيلها.

الوصول يشترط عمليات بيلوجية صعبة و خطيرة مثلها مثل فصل التؤام السيامي الملتصق من الرأس. لكن في هذه الحالة الإلتصاق في منطقة أكثر حساسية و يحتاج إلى جراحة أدق و أعمق.

مشهد 1

يجلس أطفال على الأرض أمام التلفزيون يشاهدون فيلم

The Curse of the Jade Scorpion

تدخل الأم و تقول "أووووف. وودي آلن ده مقرف. بكرهه بجد!! حولوا و النبي و هاتوا حاجة تانية".

قطع.

على مدار سنوات لم يشاهد هؤلاء الثلاثة هذا الفيلم من أوله لأخره أبداً. دائماً فقط في مشاهد مقطعة.

مشهد 2

يجلس نفس الأطفال – الأن فتيات و آنسات – و يشاهدن

Hollywood Ending

تدخل الجدة و و تقول أنها تكره وودي آلن لأنه أقام علاقة جنسية مع إبنة زوجته بالتبني.

هو شخصية زبالة. تغير القناة و لا يكملوا الفيلم.

مشهد 3

تجلس شابة في أوائل العشرينات (و هي بطلة فيلم وودي آلن إنتاج مصري لم يصور بعد) مع صديقة و 2 من اصدقائها على قهوة في وسط المدينة.

يتكلم عمر (واحد من الأصدقاء) عن فيلم من أفلام وودي آلن و هو منبهر.

تضحك البطلة المصرية و تقول "بس أنا مبحبهوش خالص. دمه تقيل"

قطع.

مشهد 4

في حوار عن روبرت فروست الشاعر الأمريكي و جمال شعره يتقدم أحد بنظرية فصل ما بين الفن و الفنان حتى

لا يتأثر حبنا للفن بشخصية الفنان التي من الممكن جداً أن تكون ثقيلة الدم.

تتذكر وودي آلن الذي ضاجع أبنة زوجته بالتبني و تشعر إن هذا لا يجعل منه إنسان قذر أو مخرج سيء.

لا هذه خيانة لأمها و جدتها.

"أيوة. زي وودي آلن كده. لما عرفت عنه محبتهوش خالص. جدتي بتقول روبرت فروست كده بردو".

قطع.

الوصول أصعب مما نتخيل.

لسنوات كرهت وودي آلن و أنا لم آرى من وودي آلن إلا المقاطع من فيلميه الغير مكتملين في ذاكرتي. أصبحت علاقتي به علاقة كره موروثة لا أكثر و لا أقل. لا أشاهد أفلامه حتى لا أغير من كرهي هذا, لأنني كنت أعرف – و كان هذا يقين مغروس داخلي منذ سنوات – إنني فور ما أترك نفسي لأفلام وودي آلن ستكون الخيانة و سأكون مضطرة أن أوصل لرأي الشخصي الذي يختلف طبعاً عن رأي أمي.

حافظت على كرهي لوودي آلن ليكون هذا الكره هو وصلة التشابه ما بيني و بين أمي التي نتختلف عن بعض كثيراً. لا يوجد بيني و بين آلن ما هو شخصي و هكذا يسهل عليّ كرهه لأتقرب لأمي.

و كان لابد أن أعرف من تجارب سابقة أنني فور ما أخذ قرار الإنفصال و الوصول وحدي لرأي ما عن شيء ما في الوجود – عادة ما يكون ما أتوصل إليه عكس ما كنت قد سلمت به سابقاً و أنا لازلت ملتصقة بطرف جونلة أمي.

مشهد 5

داخلي نهار

تجلس بطلة الرواية (الرواية هنا ممكن تكون لأهداف سويف) مع صديق على سرير فردي ساندين رأسهما على مخدتين و مواجهين شاشة كمبيوتر سوداء.

يشاهدون فيلم لوودي آلن Interiors

تقترب الكاميرا للشاشة و يكون الكادر الذي يشاهدونه هو كادر هذا المشهد.

الكادر هو الآتي:

أوفر فويس للأخت الوسطى و هي تقول أن أختها تجرعت حب أمها للفن و ذوقها فيه و كبرت و هي ممتلئة برأي الأم. (هذا طبعاً ليس نص السيناريوا الأصلي)

تتحرك الكاميرا ببطء للبطلة و ترتكز على وجهها. الكادر كله وجهها هي فقط.

صوت الويس أوفر لا يزال في الخلفية. ينتهي.

تتغير النظرة على وجهها.

وصَلت.

"وانص أبون أيه تايم...ذير واز سري براذرز..."

قاطعتها للمرة الثالثة و هي لازالت في البداية. بتقول يا هادي.

قالت بصوتها الرفيع الناعم "ثير وير ثري براثرز." ثم "و لا إيه؟"

نظرت إليها و هي تريد أن تقتلها و حاولت الإبقاء على الهدوء الذي لا وجود له. "أمال أنا قلت إيه؟ يا

حبيبتي؟؟؟"

"أعتقد إنتِ قريتها غلط و قلتي "واز " بدل "وير". مش متأكدة".

لكنها هي كانت متأكدة من شيء واحد و هي أنها لو أستطاعت لطبقت في مزمار رقبتها الناعمة البيضاء.

نورا البيضاء الملساء.

بدأت من جديد.

"وانص أبون أي تايم. ذير وير سري براذرز. ذي سري أوف ذيم وير برينسيز, سونز أوف زي كينج أو ذي لاند..."

"معلش أنا أسفة بس إنتِ متأكده إنهم أولاد الملك؟ دي أنهي حدوتة فيهم؟ أصل أنا قرياهم كلهم و مفيش واحدة كده. إتأكدي بس و النبي"

تملكت نفسها من أن تقذف عليها الكتاب الصغير و تطفشها للأبد.

"أيوه متأكده. أمال هقلف؟؟؟؟ لو سمحتي كفاية مقاطعة!!"

سكتت نورا و أكملت هي في القراءة تتلعثم عند كلمة صعبة و نورا تصححها و هي تهمس لمن يجلس بجانبها. و طبعاً من جلس بجانب نورا كان سعيد الحظ. دوماً. سعيد الحظ من جلس بجانب هذه الأميرة التي لا تتماشي نهائياً مع هذا الحي. بملابسها الجديدة و لكنتها المثالية في الإنجليزية و شعرها الناعم الذي لا يحتاج كي لتطلقه و ينسدل على ظهرها.

ماذا كانت تفعل هنا؟ وسط مباني السيدة القديمة. هل جائت من الكويت لتسرق أنظار شباب الحارة و هي تمشي غير مهتمة بهؤلاء العربجية؟؟

و لماذا تأتي لمجموعة القراءة في الجمعية؟ لتستعرض نطقها المثالي للإنجليزي؟؟ أووووف. لا تطيق رؤية خلقتها وسط المستمعون.

مسكت نورا نفسها من المقاطعة المتكررة للقارئة و تغاضت عن كل مشاكل النطق و الأخطاء النحوية و حتى قراءة الحروف السايلنت.

جلست تفكر في دورها القادم و تتلذذ في التفكير في أصعب قصة في هذه المكتبة البئيسة التي ستختارها لها من قبلها التي لا تعرف الإس من التي إتش. مهما كانت صعوبة القصة فهي ستقرائها بجدارة و سيستمتع بها الجالسون و لن تقع في خطاء واحد. ستبهرهم بملكتها للحكي الحدوتة فهي تتدرب كل يوم...

"ذي لاست برنس ريفيوزد تو تيك زي هيلب أوف زي أوجر أند هيي وينت أون ذي جوزني أون هيز أون. زي إيند."

صرخت نورا "لأ على فكرة! دي مش نهاية القصة. القصة لسه فيها حتة كمان."

خافت. و نظرت إلى الصفحة الأخيرة في الكتاب. نعم هذه هي أخر الكلمات. هذه هي أخر صفحة أصلاً. ماذا تريد الأن هذه القذرة الوقحة الغيورة؟؟؟؟

قامت نورا و إتجهت نحوها و أخذت منها الكتاب. نظرت إليه ملياً و قالت بصوت عاليّ

"أه...الكتاب ده مقطع. الصفحة الأخيرة مقطوعة. أصل أنا قريت الحكاية دي قبل كده و عارفاها. لو تحبوا...ممكن قبل ما أبتدي قصتي أكملكوا بقيت الحدوتة. إيه رأيكوا؟؟"

وافق الجميع و في ثواني كانت الأعين كلها إتجهت بعيداً عنها و تركزت على نورا و هي تجلس مقرفصة على الأرض بجونلتها المزركشة و الصندل الجديد.

أه كم كان الصندل جميلاً.

خرج صوت نورا للغرفة بطبقات مختلفة يعلو و ينخفض مع كل تغير في الجكاية. تحبس نفسها و هي تحكي و تطلقه و يتنفس معها الجالسون و يحمد كل منهم ربه على سلامة الأمير الأخير.

"أند ثي ليفد هايبلي إيفر أفتر. ذي إيند."

لم تتوقف. "إيه رأيكوا؟ أنا الصراحة مليش في النهايات السعيدة دي أوي. تحبوا أقرا حدوتة تانية؟؟"

نعم. نعم. نعم.

لم يهتم بها أحد و لا حتى لتقوم و تختار قصة لتقرائها نورا. أختارت نورا كتاب سميك و لغته صعبة و بدأت في القراءة.

"إن ذي إيفنينج بريز ذي واكت توجيذر..."

النحو غير صحيح!!! ألم يلحظ أحد؟؟ ألم يلحظوا نطقها السيء؟ تقول زي مثلها. فتحت فمها لتقول للناس "نورا نطقت كلمة أو إتنين غلط إنتوا مش واخدين بالكوا؟؟"

نظرت حولها تستنجد بهم لترى من لاحظ. لكن أحداً لم يكن يستمع. الكل كان ينظر على نورا و ساقيها اللتان بانتا من تحت الجونلة. التي كشفت عن سمانتين أملستين بدون شعرة واحدة.

أه ياني!!! أمها تسمح لها بالحلاوة منذ هذا السن المبكر؟؟؟!!!

Water Babies

Once upon a time

there was water

It filled everything. Spaces. Places in between toes.

It came to her in plenty. Placentas filled with blue. Bellies filled with too much – water after a meal that leaves her hungry but nauseas. There is no room for air.

It begins with dreams.

Not crowded. Hugged. A miniature of the Twins. Not facing outwards but facing each other. Swimming in blueness. Blue she has only thought of – starry starry blue. Swirling blue. Sleeping blue. Both hugged in blue, hugging the other in the softness of a wall-less womb.

Between them, their curls awoke, reaching for other stray strands to braid with. Braiding and curling silk and rope. Keeping them steady in blue.

In the blues.

He sank. Lower and Lower. Deeper into where should could not swim. It was too shallow. She tripped over the waves. He fell into the pillow of nightfall, she was of dawn. As he sank, he tugged and tore. Her hair flew sprawled around her not used to having no shape.

Her curls straightened in an attempt to float.

Nothing.

She drowned in the shades of the bruises on her body from all the times he tried to carve his name into her skin.

He is blue.

The music becomes meaningless. The notes of sorrow linked with so so long ago are not his own. He does not own the word. Nor the music. His music doesn’t match the sorrow of blues. His sorrow broke on her skin in kisses with too much love which he did not know where to keep.

She kept it in bottles.

Crying her own rain, she stored it for days of drought. Bottled. Mineral. From the belly of her eye.

Every bottle carries memory.

He is here. He was here. Once upon a memory. Once upon a dream. In a dimmed bedroom in a narrow bed hugging a window. Water bottles almost empty on bedside tables and rolling with a few lonely breezes that pass by, intrusive. She day dreamed of becoming the other twin.

"We were Siamese twins"

Her dream passed him by. Warmth touched him leaving him shivering. Ovum and sperm did not hold. The Twins never came. There was the endless braiding of hair that never holds in water. Ropes broke once the knot was tied.

The Twins did not come. She did not birth them. She lay hoping they would take shape. Hoping her body and his would curl into each other. Frantic, in a last plea she pushes the babies together.

They break into red between her thighs. His eyes, waiting for something, peeling her skin, searching for the bones.

Showers of blessings.

She knows the love of rain drops now on her face like she longed for his finger tips. Rain drops are not disappointing. At first there is too little but the thirst is gone. She just stands damp with the waiting. She stands watered.

Baraka – too sweet

too sweet

She stops buying the slim bottles he doesn't like. She stops drinking the sweetened water with blessings from the earth. She pretends fullness to pass his judgment. Sweetness can be found elsewhere. Not just in drops from the belly of the Mother.

Baraka

After midnight, under covers of white, through the drapery, the thunder wakes her. She wakes up. Suddenly. Opens her eyes. Looks at the breath rising and falling in undeclared pain and shivers beside her. There are no bottles here to choose from.

Her toes climb out into the cold, shake the fear out of bed as she peeks into gray.

The roaring welcomes her in his arms. There is no choice but to go for long desired sweetness. She wavers on the ridge. She has long forgotten the stroke for survival.

There is no blue. There is only water.

Only her. And a broken cord.

عن البعث و الكورال و الأبواب المفتوحة

بدأت هذا التدوينة منذ يومين و لم أكن قد كتبت إلا هذا العنوان. في لحظة ما في يوم ما من الأيام السابقة شعرت بأن هذا كل ما أشعر به: البعث و الكورال و الأبواب المفتوحة.

و ها أنا الأن أكتب "تدوينة" و أنا لم أعهد ذلك من قبل. أبداً لم أجلس لأكتب تدوينة كنت أخذ ما كتبته لأي سبب كان: ورشة أو تدريب أو مجرد تفريغ طاقة – و أطلقه في خلخال.

الأن أصبحت أكتب تدوينات مخصوصة لأضعها على خلخالي.

أنا الأن لا أتذكر تحديداً ما الذي دفعني لأكتب هذا العنوان لكنني أستطيع التخمين.

يوم السبت حضرت يوم

الذي كان موضوعه البحث و منذ أسبوع مضى و أنا في أخر ورشة لمشروع كورال و من يومين شاهدت فيديو سحر في تيد إكس العام الماضي مع ايمي أختي الصغيرة التي أذاكر معها كل يوم من أجل إمتحان يوم الجمعة 27 مايو.

هذه أسباب واضحة و أنا أحب الكلكعة و الأسباب البسيطة البديهية لا تلفت إنتباهي أبداً.

لأنها ببساطة لا تكن أسباب حقيقية.

منذ الأسبوعين الماضيين و أنا أشعر أنني أتحرك في عالم لم أسبق التواجد فيه. أشعر كأنني جديدة في هذه الأماكن التي أعرفها جيداً و وسط هؤلاء الناس الذين أحبهم و أقضي معهم أوقات طويلة من وقتي.

أعرف أن السبب الواضح هو عدم وجود شخص كان أقرب من ليّ في السنة الماضية و عدم وجوده يشعرني بأنني في مكان مختلف. هو ليس إختلاف سيء أو موحش أو مقبض أو سعيد أو مبهج. هو مجرد إختلاف و هذا أحياناً – لو لم يكن دائماً – مقلق.

أما السبب الخفي فهو تواجد شخص جديد لم أشعر بوجوده و لا بشخصه و كانت مقابلته مفاجأة و وجوده حولي مرهق قليلاً و إصراره على البقاء راحة لم أعهدها من فترة.

فسلمت. قلت لنفسي هذا يحدث أحياناً, نُلقى في أغرب مكان بعيداً عن راحتنا و بالرغم من أرادتنا لنقابل من لم نفكر فيه.

يوم السبت يوم تيد إكس بالجامعة الأمريكية بالتجمع الخامس كانت تمشي بجانبي تأخذني من يدي حول هذا المكان الذي لم أزره من قبل إلا مرتين: قضيت هناك يومين من الصباح للمغيب. و ها أنا منذ أيام أمشي و أشعر أنني لا أعرف المكان و هي تهمس في أذني بدون مجهود و هي تتذكر هذا الوقت الماضي و تفاصيل لم أكن كنت فكرت فيها منذ أكثر من عام.

تركتني سمر عند محطة مترو الدمرداش. و هناك كانت تتكلم على لساني و تقول لسمر بثقة "أيوه أنا نزلت هنا قبل كده لما أخدتيني يوم عيد ميلادك". كان هذا من عام و أكثر. و تسلقت الدرجات القذرة كأنني صديقة قديمة و ركبت المترو و أنا أعرف – ككف يدي – إلى إين أنا ذاهبة.

في ورشة الكورال عندما وصلت متأخرة جداً و كان وجودي بلا فائدة من أي نوع جسلت أستمع إلى الأصوات التي تحاوطني في دائرة واسعة و صوتي الذي خرج مني و أنا لا أعرف هل هو صوتي أم صوتها هي؟

إنزعجت من وجودها – من تلازمها – من حرارة نَفسهِا على رقبتي التي تشبه قفاه الأرنب. شعرت بثقل وجودها و إصرارها لتُعلمنُي "أنا هنا و مش ماشية تاني. إنتِ رفصتيني كتير أوي".

أجلس مع ايمي اليوم التالي و أستمع للمرة المعرفش كام لصوت سحر و هي تتكلم لكنني لم أسمع غير "الباب المفتوح". عدت إلى لطيفة الزيات و ليلى التي خلقتُها و البحث الذي كتبته عن الباب المفتوح و ليلى التي كتبتها أنا في ديسمبر 2009. و كانت هي كعادتها في الأيام الماضية تغير الصور سريعاً لتتحرك الأشياء كلها في إنسجام يشبه أيس كريم الفانيليا. و أتذكر أنا و أشعر كأنني في مكان أخر غير سريري الصغير الفوضوي و كأن هذه التي تتذكر ليست أنا.

الأشياء لا تحدث بعشوائية أبداً. أنا أؤمن بذلك.

هي ليست عشوائية أن أقرر في أول يوم في ورشة الكورال أنني أنتمي للمجموعة التي تفلسفت و كلكعت و فكرت في صورة الولادة من مكان ضيق إلى كون واسع و كيف نصنع نحن بأيدينا كون أصغر و أضيق يصعب فيه التنفس. هذه مع العلم إنني لم أساهم بشيء في هذه الفكرة لأنني كنت أجلس في فقاعتي البلاستكية.

و هي ليست عشوائية أن يكون يوم تيد إكس عن البعث. أنا لست نرجسية بدرجة أن أتوهم أن من قاموا بتسمية المؤتمر بهذا الأسم فعلوا ذلك من أجلي. و هذا ما يخلق معناها ليّ في هذا الوقت: أنني لا أتذكر من هذا اليوم – الذي كان مليء بأفكار مذهلة – غير رغبتي الدفينة في أن أغطس عميقاً داخلي و أخرج بكيلو أو أثنين من زينب التي أفتقدها و أكرس كثير من الوقت لأرويها و أعطيها الكافي من الشمس و الهواء.

أنا أستمع فقط لما أريد الإستماع إليه. هذا تقول دوماً أمي و دوللي و كل من يعرفني جيداً. و لهذا فهي ليست صدفة أنني لم أسمع غير الباب المفتوح و الأبواب المفتوحة و كل ما يخص الأبواب و الخروج في ما كانت تقوله سَحرْ. لم يتوقف ذهني و قلبي إلا عند هؤلاء.

طبعاً يمكن أن يكون كل هذا نتاج هوايتي القديمة في الكلام لمجرد الكلام – أنا في الأخر برج الميزان و لا أستطيع التغير من نفسي و لا برجي.

يمكن أن يكون إنضمامي للمجموعة التي قادت فكرة الولادة في الكورال لأنني أحب التفلسف مثلما أحب يداي.

و هو بديهي أن أفكر في البعث بعد تيد إكس بما إن اليوم كله كان يدور حول ذلك.

و ربما سمعت فقط الباب المفتوح لأنني كالعادة قدرتي على التركيز مثل قدرتي على تكلم الفرنسية. و من يعرفني يعرف لابقتي في هذه اللغة.

بس أنا أحب الأشياء الخفية التي ترهقني في البحث عنها و ترهقني لأجدها. أنا أكره الطرق المختصرة حتى لو كانت مرصوفة.

علاقتي بالجيش ممكن تكون إبتدت بذرتها قبل الثورة عشان جوز خالتي كان لواء جيش. هو دلوقتي متقاعد. بس أنا فاكرة كويس جداً يوم شتمت بابا حسني و هو كان قاعد في نفس الأوضة و سمعت محاضرة طويـــــــــلة عن الرئيس و إحترامه.

بس أنا أمي علمتني إن إللي ميحترمش نفسه من الأصل بيفقد إحترام الناس.

و ده إللي المجلس العسكري بيثبت كل يوم إنه بيعمله و بجدارة: بيفقد إحترام الناس.

بس مجلسنا العظيم بيعمل حاجة عجيبة جداً – يعمل العملة و يقول مش أنا – أو يعمل العملة و يكون في ضغط و يتراجع بس بشياكة طبعاً (الجيش برده له بريستيج) – و أخر حاجة بقى إنه بعد ما أفرج عن الملقبين بالبلطجية المقبوض عليهم على في أيام مختلفة طوال الشهور إللي فاتت إنه طلع بيان زي الفل كده بيقول إن إللي بيكبتوا

عن المجلس إنه شرير و وحش دول مندسيين.

تاني, المجلس بيثبت عدم قدرته على الإبداع إطلاقاً. نفس الألفاظ بتاعت أتباع مبارك.

فكرت شوية قبل ما أقعد أكتب التدوينة دي عشان النهاردة يوم كتابة تدوينات ضد محاكمة المدنيين عسكرياً و حاجات تانية المجلس العسكري بيعملها و بينكر فعلها لاحقاً.

قلت طيب هيقبضوا عليّ؟ هيحققوا معايا زي بثينة كامل مثلاً بتهمة سب المؤسسة العسكرية؟ و بعدين أنا مش بثنية كامل أنا فسية على رأي ريم صاحبتي و ممكن أروح ورا الشمس. و أنا توصلت لحاجة مهمة أوي وقت الثورة و هي إني جبانة فعلياً و أنا مش مكسوفة إني أقول كده.

بس كان لازم أكتب التدوينة دي. هي مش شجاعة قد ما هي فعلاً غضب.

و الغضب ده إبتدى فعلاً يوم ما علي صبحي إتقبض عليه. مع أنا و علي مكناش قريبيين خالص لما ده حصل. بس أنا إتخاضيت. مكنتش فاكرة إنهم ممكن يعملوا كده و ممكن واحد من إللي إتاخدوا يكون صديق.

و بعدها لما كنا بنشتغل على عرض جزء منه شهادة علي بعد ما خرج من الجيش كنت بقعد ساعات في وسط ما إحنا بنعرض مش فاهمة الجمل إللي أنا بقولها طلعت فعلاً و حصلت إزاي.

كنت لسه مخضوضة.

و طوال المدة دي كان في ناس كتير غير علي بيتقبض عليهم و المجلس بينكر أو يطلع بيان يقول قبضنا على بلطجية.

يوم الفن ميدان يوم 7 مايو عرضنا و لما خلصنا و كنا واقفين بره السرادق جت واحدة بنت عندها 11 أو 12 سنة و شدت على هدومي و قالت لي "ممكن اسألك سؤال؟ هو الحكايات إللي قلتوها جوه دي حصلت فعلاً؟"

قلت لها أه. حصلت. و دول أصحابنا.

"بصت لي بصة عمري ما هنساها" (دي جملة من شهادة علي مع التغير للمؤنث) و أنا حسيت إننا شوهت طفولة البنت بس على الأقل لما تطلب من أبوها إنها تتصور جنب الدبابة تاني ممكن تفتكر إللي حكيناه.

أنا بكتب التدوينة دي عشان علي صبحي إللي ضحكته بتملى قلبي بهجة و عشان يوسف إبن إيمان إللي في رصاصة في كتفه الشمال من الطلق الحي إللي ضربوه على المتظاهرين عند السفارة و الدكاترة مش عارفين يشيلوها عشان خايفيين يفقد القدرة على تحريك دراعه. و عشان كل البنات إللي إتكشفت على عذريتهم و كان ممكن أكون أنا منهم أو أختي أو صاحبتي. و عشان الولد إللي عنده 17 سنة و إتحكم عليه بالإعدام عشان تحرش بواحدة و الضباط إللي إنتهكوا أعراض البنات و الستات يوم 9 مارس قاعدين و لا كأنهم عملوا حاجة. و عشان طارق شلبي إللي شفته يوم السبت و سمعت من بقه شوية من إللي كنت قريته على بلوج محمد عفت. و عشان أنا خايفة لما أنزل يوم الجمعة يحصل حاجة للناس إللي بحبها. و عشان الأهالي إللي علي خميس راح صوّر معاهم مرتين إللي ولادهم إتاخدوا من المترو يوم 9 مارس. و عشان الأمهات إللي منى بتكتب عنهم على طول على تويتر. عشان منى و شجاعتها. و عمرو البحيري إللي أخد 3 سنين و هو معملش حاجة. و ناس كتير تانية أنا مش عارفة عنهم حاجة و في ناس على البلوج ده بتحاول تساعدهم و تخرجهم.

أما بعد....

ده جوابي التاني.

كان في حاجات تانية كتبتها بس مكانتش جوابات. ده الجواب التاني و زي الأولاني غالباً مش هتشوفه و لا تقراه.

أنا بعمل كل حاجة مرتين. حتى لو فشلت المرة الأولى دايماً بيكون في محاولة تانية. و دي المحاولة التانية لكتابة الجواب ده – إللي إنت مش هتقراه.

أنا مش متأكده إذا كنت أنا عايزاك تقراه بس هو أسهل كتير من الكلام. بس بما إننا مش هنتكلم أصلاً ف الجواب ملهوش لزمة عشان كتابته مش أسهل من حاجة تانية.

أنا إبتديت كتاب "Eat Pray Love" إمبارح. دي تاني مرة يكون في محاولة لبدء الكتاب ده و إمبارح المحاولة نجحت. المرة الأولى كنت إنت موجود – أو بالأصح مش موجود – و زي ما المرة الفاتت سيبت الكتاب للمحاولة التانية أنا سيبت أنا و إنت للمرة التانية.

بس المرات التانية كمان بتخلص و بيكون علينا إننا نختار هل هيكون في مرة تالتة؟؟

أنا لسه في أول الكتاب بس بفكر في التلات حاجات دول: أكل و صلاة و حب. بفتكر كل المرات إللي أكلنا فيها مع بعض و قد إيه دي كانت بتفرحني. مش عارفة ليه بس كنت بحس بحميمية فظيعة و أنا بأكل معاك. كنت ببقى براحتي أكتر من لحظات تانية كتير.

في يوم كده – كان جمعة – و كنت لوحدي في جامع الحاكم و شفتك بعدها و سألتني عملتي إيه النهاردة؟ و قلت لك إني قعدت أتفرج على الحمام و هو بيطير و يرجع و يعود لمكانه تاني وسط الرخام البارد إللي بيرطب الدنيا.

و بس كده؟ قعدتي؟

أه. قعدت. و أنا ماشية كان المغرب أذن و حسيت إني عايزة أصلي و صليت.

إنت عمرك ما كنت بتفهم الحاجات إللي عجيبة إللي بعملها لوحدي و بدون سبب واضح. أنا مكنتش بحاول أفهمها – كنت بعمل إللي أنا حاساه و خلاص.

بفتكر المرات إللي كان بيحصلي حاجات عجيبة و أكون مش فاهمة ليه هي بتحصل و بعدها أحس بإمتنان فظيع عشان ربنا بعتلي هدية أو حاجة صغيرة مكنتش متوقعاها و مكنتش حاسة حتى إني أستاهلها منغير ما أطلبها أو حتى أفكر فيها. عمري ما كنت بعرف أحكيلك على الحاجات العبيطة دي. كنت بتكسف. و بخاف لتقول عليا عبيطة.

كنت خايفة على طول.

كنت خايفة أفقدك. و حتى دلوقتي مش قادرة أفهم الكلمة معناها إيه و هل أنا فقدتك فعلاً و لا لأ؟ أنا فقدتك أنا عارفة بس في حاجات كتير لسه موجودة – حاجات مبتمشيش. عاملة زي ريحة بارفان مسكت في بلوزة قطن و مراحتش بعد الغيسل.

في مثل كده بيقول "مينفعش تفتقد إللي مكانش لك في الأول"

هو أنا ينفع أفتقدك؟

دلوقتي أنا مش عارفة. و قبل كده مكنتش عارفة برده, بس الفرق إن ساعتها أنا كنت بحاول على طول أعرف و أتاكد و دلوقتي مفيش سبب يخليني أحاول تاني.

المحاولات ليها عمر يا حبيبي

زي كل حاجة تانية. حتى الإنتظار ليه عمر. و أنا مكنتش قادرة أستنى و إنت قلت لي متسنيش.

قلتها بالفاتحة...نفسي أسمعها بالكسرة

أنا بكره الأغنية دي على فكرة, بكرهها لأنها عمرها ما كانت ليا. و أنا كنت بقعد أستناها تكون ليا و مكنتش من نصيبي.

و أنا خلاص مش عايزة أستنى تاني.

و أحلى حاجة في الجوابات إللي مبتتبعتش إن الواحد مبيستناش رد.

الإنتظار بيقتل حاجات كتير أوي: خلاية المخ إللي مبتزيدش, ساعات فاضية مش ماليها حتى الهوا, الحب إللي منغير كل الكلكعة إللي عملناها أنا و إنت.

و الجوابات إللي مبتتبعتش ملهاش لا أظرف و لا طوابع...و لا عنوان.

زينب

Night Kohl

She stopped using black. It smudged, smeared and left botches that didn’t go away very easily. Some wouldn’t; they just stayed, stains on paper.

She thought that replacing them with lighter shades – grey, brown, deep teal – for her lower eye lid would fix things. It would stop the heavy smudging. If it smudges, it wouldn’t be a black eye.

One less bruise to cover.

The heat would make it worse. The smudging would be worse. She looked punk. Punk like Kurt Cobain.

"He's not punk" – his voice is cold.

She froze. She isn’t impressing him, that’s for sure. She looks at him hard but does not really see him; he is a blur of whiteness. His skin is so fair, his hair is so soft. He plays the guitar. He doesn’t like her. So she goes to the one with curly hair like hers. The one who like Kurt Cobain just to impress her.

She wears kohl to be beautiful for him.

Black kohl.

She doesn’t know if the other colors are called kohl as well. Maybe eyeliner. Kohl calls for black, for softness, for the fluid powder contained and hugged warmly, loosely in the peach bottle.

Turn, turn, turn. And turn. After you're done, tiny trinkets, dots adorn your cheek bones, your pale hands.

Years later she doesn't wear it in the summer hear. Her eyes go pale, light lashes. Her skin bronzed and browned. She meets him, her lover, sweating, shining in the Ramadan lights. The sweat collects between her skin and the linen she wears loose on her body. It sleeps under the folding of her two breasts. Tickling her in discomfort at the cave at the back of her knees.

When they kiss there is no mirror to see how her body moves in holiness as his yearns in tender aggression. There is no mirror to reflect her eyes – darker than her skin – closed with wonder, sweat heaving on her eye lids.

She spends nights black as kohl looking for the mirror to reflect her longing eyes without smudges. As winter crawls up her legs and warms her heart, she lines her brown eyes once more with brown, grey and turquoise leaving black for days of bigger love.

She wears the one dress she has – black with a pink bow – and goes to where her blood tells her. Every pound in her chest knows he is here. She treads slowly, firmly so her legs don’t fail her.

He is not there.

Yet.

Under the trees – naked with autumn cleaning – she waits as the pink fades into time.

She doesn’t see him but he is there. He arrives only after the black has flowed, smudging and bruising and she has gone off to save face.

It becomes ritual. Perhaps for memory. Maybe for God whom she ducks in fear of rejection. Black kohl becomes ritual for love.

She sleeps to hide of what grows inside her, of the fear lurking up to choke her with its density. And forgets to wipe the black descending slowly below her eyes.

She wakes up with bruises – one under her left eye, one beside her right bigger because of rubbing it till it watered. Both black, diluted and spread in sorrow.

Night black as kohl. She reminds herself of the stars that glow dipped in blackness. She reminds herself of the softness of it as it fell on the rim of the pale pink bathroom sink and she dressed in front of a mirror. Her friend, from the sea, gently drawing her eyes and smiling.

She reminds herself of her sun and her moon alternating between other shades of kohl, lighter at times to bring out the light in their eyes.

Wear black for love. For nights of magic – she tells herself. For the wisps of a breeze welcomed in gratitude. Kohl lined eyes for nights of blessings – collected till morning despite being afraid – to wipe away the bruising.

Morning Tunis

Morning.

Inside, indoors.

Giza.

Sunlight drowns the room with softness. The dark wooden floor boards seem tranquil; they are loved. Under dust, and debris of days gone past they lie in the steel file holder standing on wheels. Those are the ones that have gained a certain privilege; which she has shown off to visitors, random ones, other than him. Some are out of focus – slightly – and some are precise as the pulling of a kohl pencil between eyelids closed with certainty.

Morning.

Mug of black tea. The rhythm of the cars and buses passing under the windows has a familiar and unfriendly feel in the ears. She opens the steel file holder and takes them out. The ones fate has chosen to be present. She spreads them on the floor boards around her feet. Sizes vary. Portraits, landscapes, the river glaring blue despite the Cairo grit.

They have no claim on her. She owes them nothing. Will never see them. Yet she rests their faces inside her as she picks them up to place them in the same order as they sat before her interference with the negatives.

Giza.

Memory plays a card and Fayoum – never visited – visits her. Pictures different than she has known flow in front of her. A morning in Tunis. Women she doesn’t know in a village in Fayoum celebrating the birth of a new day. Morning beauty digitalized and saved for her to see and yearn for.

She plays hers. Out of her sleeve comes her own and last card and she plays it. Without thinking. She plays in the aftermath of a revolution in Tunis and in the middle of hers. She takes out a Queen of hearts. And loses.

Black tea.

Photography leaves through the crack in the closed window. The tea is still warm. She sips as she sits with weight on the only cushion. The ashtray is not needed today. She remembers

The art of losing isn't hard to master

It isn’t.

The art of settling into a cushion without shifting for comfort is. The art of forgetting. The art of loving the loss.

Tunis

Fuchsia kleem in morning Tunis stilled and willed to stay frozen next to manicured feet. The photograph returns as she brushes the other kleems in her memory with her own feet. Kleems on wooden floors like wrapping to bars of bitter dark chocolate. She sips again. The tea is still warm. The loss sighs inside her and she tells herself that she has the final call. The Queen of hearts is under her command. Just will it, she thinks. Will it to be anything other than a loss.

Giza

She stops sipping once she can see the tea at the bottom clearly. At her side her purse lies open. She cringes. Openness scares her now. She moves slowly inside and blesses it with her fingers. Short and used. Green. Sea green. Perhaps teal or dark turquoise. No, maybe teal. Or sea green. Names are an unnecessary burden. She leaves the cap besides the mug and stands in front of the glass panes.

Shifting she finds the right angel. The sun doesn’t hurt her eyes. First a twirl. Under the left eye. Then they come on their own from the tip of pencil. Its softness new to her skin, old to her eye lashes. She has seen this before and now she sees it in the glass on her face filling with color.

Reflected not refracted.

Cushions.

As the day flows from the tip of the pencil on to her face, she remembers the minute details. Crying. Pain. Confusion. Yearning. Wishing to undo it all with a wipe of a cotton pad with baby oil as she will clean her face. His boyish smile. His silence and staring on the floor. The warm hug in front of the mirror. Dark wood framing their faces.

Reflected.

Eye liner

She keeps the memory of giving it all with the pictures and the negatives. There they stay safe. She doesn't want to lose it in the rubble. She stares at the Queen of hearts, so aloof on the glass panes and nods. The art of letting go is hard to master.

She has forgiven him. She will forgive herself.

Morning

The sunshine in Giza is not like morning Tunis glowing with Fayoum yellow. It is sadder. She puts the cap back on. She picks the mug from its resting place to fill it again. She doesn’t pass a mirror on the way. Not one.

But the Queen of hearts was staring at her from every corner – aloof.

يا حبيبتي يا نينا

يا حبيبتي. متزعليش. أنا مش بودعك إلى الأبد يعني بس شوية كده. شوية بس عشان لازم السنة .دي تعدي على خير. بس أول ما السنة الجديدة تبتدي ههريكي بقى لغايط ما تقولي يا بس

لازم تعرفي يا نينا إن الوداع ده مؤقت. الوداع عامة شيء مؤقت. إنتِ جزء كبير و مهم في حياتي بالرغم من كل شيء بس أنا كل ما أسمع صوتك – بالذات الأغاني إللي بيحبها – فعلا قلبي بيوجعني و مبقاش حتى فاهمة الفرنساوي.

بيقول عليكي معشوقتي نينا سيمون و أنا عمري ما غيرت. يمكن غيرت عليكي عشان يعني ممكن أضطر أقطع علاقتي معاكي بس أنا عارفة إنه مش بيفكر كده. هوه عارف إني بحبك. هوه عارف حاجات كتير تانية.

المهم يا نينا يا حبيبتي أنا مش بس بودعك – أو بمعنى تاني أنا مش بودعك إنتِ بس بودّع سنة كانت مليانة بحاجات كتير و أكتر حاجة كانت ملياها كان الحب. كان فيها كمية حب تدفي القطب الشمالي كله أه و الله يا نينا. تقريبا و الله أعلم كبرت بوصة و لا أتنين السنة دي يا ست الستات.

عارفة يا نينا أنا حاسة بإيه دلوقتي؟ حاسة بحزين خفيف كده على سعادة هستيرية هتنفجر قريب. مش عارفة ليه. لما بفتكره بكون سامعة صوتك في راسي بيغني

أنا مش عارفة يعني إيه أصلا بس كنا بنسمعها مع بعض. عرفتي بقى يا نينا ليه لازم نبعد عن بعض شوية؟

فاكرة يا نينا الحفلة إللي كنتِ لابسة فيها فستان أصفر و كان شعرك ضفاير؟ لما كنتِ على البيانو و لعبتي
Aint Got No Life?

كنت أقعد أتفرج عليكي و أغني و قلبي يتملي بهجة. أنا لو كنت إتعلمت حاجة السنة دي فهي كانت ده. إني بحب الحياة.

السنة دي حبيت من أولي لأخري. حبيت يا بت يا نينا.

جبت لنفسي هدية. ثلاثة الصراحة – أصل عجبتني اللعبة.

حكيت لأول مرة مع ساحرات الحكاية.

حفظت كل أسامي الطلبة بتوعي يتوع يوم الأربع.

كتبت في خلخال عشان ده مكاني.

تميت 22 وسط مليون كيلو حب - مرتين – و المرة الأولى القمرة كانت كاملة و التانية كنت أنا مكانها.

شفت القاهرة بعنين جديدة و دوبت فيها – دوبت في الوجع و الحب زي نبيت أحمر...تخيلي كده يا نينا الريحة بتتسرسب من الرقبة الخضرا و بعدين ينزل شوية شوية للكاس و عنين مغمضة بتذوق و تتنهد – أنا كنت النبيت ده و الكاس كان القاهرة.

أنا يا نينا أؤمن بالمعجزات و ده خلاص واقع. السنة دي كانت مليانة بيهم.

عرفت ناس جميلة جديدة – منهم بس من مدونات و منهم كانوا إعادة إكتشاف صداقات. ده يوريكي يا نينا يا أختي إن الموضوع بردك
perspective. و إن العتب ع النظر.

عارفة يا نينا...السنة دي كانت جميلة. هي لسه جميلة و هتفضل جميلة. هتخلص بس هتفضل دايما معايا. خايفة تخلص. أنا خايفة تخلص عشان خايفة حاجات تخلص بس هوه كده...الحاجات بتخلص. بس دايما كانت لما تخلص حاجات تانية مختلفة و جديدة تبتدي. عشان بس أنا بخاف يا نينا. بخاف.

أنا دايما شايفة إن سنتنا – أنا و هو – لسه مخلصتش. مش عايزاها تخلص و يمكن هي مش مكتوب لها ده. مش قصدي تخلص بس تخلص. إنتِ فاهمة صح؟ أهم حاجة إنك فاهماني يا نينا. أنا كنت خايفة جدا تخلص بس هي دايما معايا زي السنة دي – في قلبي. زي صوتك.

بس أنا مختلفة جدا. أنا الست/البنت/الشجرة إللي كل حاجة حواليها بتوسع بدل ما تضيق و كل ما يقفل حاجة يفتح لي حاجة تانية ف ممبقاش محتاجة أقوله خبيني...خبيني يا سيدي.

Turquoise and Embroidered

She learned the big word earlier than the other children. Embroidery. She couldn’t say it at first but knew it meant the beautiful stitching on clothes and scarves: the minute details that seemed impossible to have been born from human finger tips.

Even though her fingers were always so slim and her hands so tiny she couldn’t imagine the effort.

Anything embroidered was always more beautiful, more precious to their eyes. She appreciated what they saw but sometimes, it seemed too much of an act. Being a plain white blouse was all the much easier. All the same, it helped to be pretty sometimes.

She still couldn’t say it. Emb – and cut. That's where she stopped. She muffled the rest of the sentence as she got older so they wouldn’t hear what she couldn’t articulate. They knew what she meant – almost all the time.

The times they didn’t, she didn’t blame them. She couldn't. She kept those to herself. Filling her growing buds with them and her already wide hips – wider than those of the rest of the girls in school but still not wide enough to be called the f word. Just the O one: she passed the limit of weight which she didn’t know who placed at the first place. Over the limit.

And she couldn’t say Embroidery.

The hips showed in pictures and the embroidery on a collar or on a scarf tied around her head to keep her curls tame showed as well. But her tongue trouble stayed hidden in the negatives - with her breasts: soft – too soft she was scared sometimes nobody would like them. But then, she didn’t really imagine who this someone would be. Her imagination which couldn’t see fingers embroidering with blue thread couldn’t see someone loving her breasts.

When her breasts filled up to their most and her hips settled in a shape she loved, she said it right. In the dark, she would say it out loud to herself: slow and steady. Diligent. Like her fingers the first time she came. And when the letters flowed like wetness, she would say it in the light but keep the loving to herself and someone-s else.

She never thought it would come loose.

Thread also comes. Thread tends to do that – it lets go.

Her imagination found out that there was to be a plural for who might love her breasts. The stitching remained a mystery.

She had mastered the art of articulation and the art of filling whiteness with the powder of soft pastels. The pictures no more revealed things she wanted to stow. She kept everything open. They started showing her new gained confidence at saying Embroidery. It gleamed in a turquoise earring, a turquoise nail.

Then there was the sea.

It was by the sea. She wasn’t there but she stumbled on the picture of the woman in a turquoise galabya – embroidered down the front.

What else could be more right? Turquoise galabya hand embroidered and the whiteness of an empty sheet of paper waiting for color.

She filled. She filled like fills everything: gaps in conversations, hunger in lovers, holes in herself.

She filled till the woman who gave her to the world through an earlier generation came to blue-ness.

She kept it under the bed – large and covered in pastel and Cairo dust.

By the time she could say embroidery in her other tongue, taatreez, she had fallen on to the old galabya turned inside out, the guts of it naked and raw and connected in a frenzy unlike the front.

There was a knot – like the ones in her curls. And since there was no balsam for the twisted thread, she pulled.

She pulled in the same room where she had pulled him to her to feel anything of what she feels alone. And again, it came.

It came loose. All the effort of the tireless hands to stitch and embroider came loose on the bed where she had lain, open and waiting for stitches to perhaps bring them both together – closer. She pulled at the knot like she pulled him – gently but with hope crammed in her throat.

She pulled.

Perhaps she will know why hands do the act of embroidery. Embroider.

She pulled.

Thinking that if she gave that last thing kept so well – so like the knot tucked away in the threads – he would love her Overthelimitofweight hips.

غسيل القاهرة

مكانش ينفع أسيب القاهرة عشان الوجع يروح ف رجعت لها تاني. رجعت للست القوية إللي تكسرك و لما تيجي تمشي و تسيبها تحس إنك سايب قلبك معاها ف ترجع لها و لشوارعها و لترابها و لنيلها الميت الأخضر.

لو كنت ههرب من القاهرة كنت هروح على الإسكندرية. هناك كل حاجة إبتدت منغير ما نحس بس أنا مكانش هاين عليا أروح لها مكسورة القلب. عايزة لما أروح أكون لميت شوية بس مش كتير أوي برده عشان بيقولوا ماية البحر ملحها زي الدوا بيطهر الجرح و ينظفه و يلم الجنبين على بعض من تاني - من جديد على أبيض.

ف رجعت للقاهرة

بس لما رجعت بعنيا كنت حاملة عيون واسعين جعانين جوايا و شفت شوارع تانية و ماياه صافية و ذقت كل حاجة من تاني.

شفت مدينة جديدة. طلعت على السطح و شفت إللي كنت عايزة أشوفه معاك و مشفتهوش – الشيشان الخضرا قديمة و جديدة و الحيطان الرمادي و الغسيل إللي كنت عايزة أرقص معاه.

عمري ما رقصت معاك. و لو كنت حاولت ترقص معايا كنت هتكسف أوي منك و مكنتش هرقص.

بس كنت هسيبك ترقص بيا

كنت على أتم الإستعداد إني أخليك ترقص بيا لحد النجوم

يمكن أنا كنت حمل ثقيل – يمكن كنت عايز توصل هناك لوحدك – يمكن كنت محتاج تكون هناك لوحدك – و إتكسفت مني.

يمكن أنا بس إللي كنت عايزة أخطو لحد السما على إيديك

يمكن...

كل يوم بأختار سبب من الأسباب دي و أبوسه و أرويه بكام دمعة من إللي بيضايقوك و بيفكروك بضعفي زي ما بتقول و برميه لفوق – بكل قوتي عشان يوصل لنجمة.

و بستنى الدنيا تشتي و تمطر ماياه مالحة من دموعي إللي وصلت مع كل الأسباب عشان لسه شوية على سفرية إسكندرية.

كباية شمس

أنا أمي جابتلي الشمس في كباية

أيوه زي ما إنتوا سمعتوا كده بالضبط. أمي جابت لي الشمس في كباية.

قرص الشمس في كباية صاج

جابتلي الشمس...هتقولوا ماشي. بس في كباية؟ طب إزاي؟

معرفش إزاي. و لما سألتها قالت لي إللي ستي دايما تقوله لما متكنش عايزة ترد على السؤال "لما يكون في النية بترصف الأيادي الطريق"

حكايتي مع قرص الشمس و الكباية الصاج متخلقتش من العدم. لأ. خرجت من بطن حكاية تانية – إتولدت من بذرة حكاية سبقتها.

حكاية ست جميلة لا قصيرة و لا طويلة بشعر عرق سوس و نمش منقوش على الكتفين. عملت زي كل بنات العمات و الإعمام و كل بنات الجيران و إتجوزت.

بعدها عملت زي الخالات و الخيلان و القطط و الغزلان و خلفت.

(زغاريد)

خلفت بنت و سمتها زينب – زينب على ستنا زينب. زينب يعني شجرة صغيرة. هي الزينة.

زينب – زين أبوها.

قالوها إنها زين أبوها.

و من الحكاية دي بدأت حكاية تانية مفهاش ألوان و لا زغاريد. بدأت مع اليوم إللي حصل فيه إللي حصل للمرة الأولى.

معملتش العشاء عشان تنيم بنتها. كانت بتغنيلي و ترسملي بصوتها حمام زاغل و سما و نقط مطر و أنا أروح في النوم و الحلم.

عمل إللي عمله و قالها "أنا مستناش." شاور على بنتها و قال "هي تستنى بس أنا مستناش".

و من ساعتها و الوجع زاد و بهت النمش و ذبل أسود شعرها مع مرة تحاول تهرب ببنتها بره الكابوس ده و تفشل.

بس جه الوقت إللي زهق منها و من نفسها إللي متكسرتش ف رمى عليها اليمين. و خلى البنت معاه عشان يكسر قلبها و قالها "لو أخدتي البت مش هتشوفي مني مليم"

خرجت من سجنه للمحاكم تحاول تأخد بنتها. و مع إن قلبها كان تقيل بالحزن على فراق الصغيرة النمش رجع شوية بشوية و الدفا عاد لخصلات شعرها و كل مرة كانت تشوف بنتها خطف كانت تطلع زغرودة من قلبها.

و لما كبِرت قالت له أمي "خلاص البنت تختار"

غضب و قال "مفيش عندي حاجة اسمها كده. و هنفضل أنا و إنتِ ما بين محاكم و محاميين لحد..."

و سكت ثواني

"لحد إيه؟ إنت هتوقف عند إيه؟"

بص للشمس من الشباك و لكوباية المايه الساقعة الصاج قدامه و قالها "لحد ما تجيبي الشمس في كوباية"

ممكن أقولكوا إن أمي طلعلها جناحات و طارت لقرص الشمس و جابته و طبقته في كباية. و ممكن كمان أقولكوا حكايات عن وحوش حاربتهم و آلهة الأساطير إللي هزمتهم لحد ما وصلت للهي عايزاه. و ممكان كمان يكون عندها عصاية سحرية هزتها مرتين و نزلت لها الشمس ما بين إيديها.

كل ده محصلش

هي عملت إللي كل ست بتعمله عشان نفسها و كل أمها بتعمله عشان بنتها و كل إنسان بيعمله عشان يتنفس.

معرفش هي جابت الشمس في كوباية إزاي بس أعرف إنها لما دخلت الأوضة في إيدها كوباية متغطية بطبق فنجان أبويا ضحك. و أنا بصيت لأمي و غمزتلها عشان تطمني ف غمزتلي و شالت الطبق.

إنفجر في الأوضة دفا بكل الألوان و درجات الأصفر إللي رقصت على الحيطان و القرص فوق رأس أمي – هالة من الأساطير أو الجان.

نزلت معاها على السلالم و الجيران بيزفوني مع أمي – رايحة لدنيا جديدة و قرص الشمس مش مفارقنا.

و الزغاريد بتبوسني و تبوسها

مش فاكرة زقيتي الشيش و لا لأ بس كنتِ بتبعتري فتافيت العيش زي ما الشمس بتبعتر دفاها. و كانوا يجوا كلهم – جيش أو كتيبة – يزقزقوا و يدردشوا في الدوود و العيش المفتفت و نور الشمس و كانوا دايما يجوا اليوم إللي بعده.

ساعات عينيا بتوقف مرة واحدة عند لون معين و أنا ماشية في الشارع: لون من ألوان الكبايات البلاستيك إللي كنتي بتشربينا فيها و إحنا صغيرين. كنتِ بتشربيهم هما كمان. جنب الفتافيت الذهبية كانت كوباية ماياه عشان ريقهم و ريشهم مليانة على طول.

مش عارفة كنتِ قاصدة و لا لأ بس عند الركن الشمال كانت الكباية بتلم كل نور الشمس إللي كان يلمع في الماياه طول اليوم. أما بقى عند المغربية كانت تتركز كل الألوان جوا الكوباية كأن الشمس بتستخبى و هتصحى بكره معاكي مع أول فتفوتة نور.

بحب إني أفكر إن الشمس كانت بتطلع لما كنتِ تصحي و تدلوقي الماياه القديمة و تغيرها فتخرج من الكباية الحمرا البلاستيك ة تفرش أرض السما.

و بحب برضو أفكر إن الحكاية إللي سمعتها و أنا بنت صغيرة صح. إنك إديتليه موزة فلما قشرها و أكلها حبيتوا بعض.

أنا عمري ما قلت لك إني لقيت الصورة. لقيتها و لقيت جوابات بخط إيديه إللي مش فاكراها. إللي ما بين السطور و ما بين كل حرف من كلمة "وحشتيني" خلاني أبكي على خشب الأرض في الأوضة إللي كانت أوضتكوا و بعد كانت مبقتش أوضتك.

شفت الصورة من قريب تاني. شفتها كويس – برده من من وراكي و منغير ما أقولك. بصيت فيها كويس – فستانك و طرحتك و رجليكي إللي مشفتش في جمالهم و طولك إللي مورثتهوش.

دورت على الشمس في الصورة و ملقتهاش. عشان كده بتخبيها؟ عمرك ما خبيتي صورة مني – حتى إللي عمري ما شفتهم كانوا دايما قدامي.

دلوقتي إنتِ شلتي كل الصور و البراويز – كلهم إلا واحدة. إنتِ و واحدة ست بجلبيتها القديمة قدام بيتها الملون بعد ما صورتيها. إنتِ في الصورة دي. إشاربك و كباياتك و الكاميرا و عدساتها و شمسك. شمسك في الصورة إللي مزنوقة في مرايا الأوضة إللي كانت أوضتكوا.

خميس

لم أشعر بوجودي خفيف مثل يوم الخميس 21 أكتوبر. كنت خفيفة – حفيفة للغاية و بعدها قالت لي مها أنني خسيت. لا أعتقد أن هذا هو السبب. لم أكن خفيفة كما قال كونديرا الذي أتذكره الأن دون أي سبب غير أنني أكتب عن الخفة.

أعتقد أنه كان معي و أنا لا أدري بوجوده حتى هذه اللحظة.

لم أفكر في الكتابة عن يوم الخميس لكن ما كتبته رضوى أسامة في مدونتها

حرك الشيء الذي يدفعني إلى الكتابة.

اليوم أنا ممتنة ليوم الخميس و لرضوى أسامة لعدة أسباب.

دفعتني رضوى – ما كتبته و وجودها الجميل في القسم في ندوة معها يوم الخميس – إلي الكتابة و عادة من يفعل ذلك يكون روح جميلة و خفيفة و تعرف الوصول إلى دهاليز مظلمة لا أجرؤ تخطتيها وحدي. رضوى فعلت ما فعله برتقال نهى محمود المنحرف و رحلتها إلى سوهاج و زينب التي قابلتها هناك و تلك البنت المكتملة – فتسلتت أصابعي التي أحبها كثيرا إلى اللابتوب لتلعب مع هذه الكلمات.

بدء يوم الخميس كأي يوم أخر. أنا أعرف أن الندوة التي تديرها دوللي بالمساء - السادسة لأكون أدق و جلست مع إيمي في غرفة المعيشة ننتظر ER ككل يوم الساعة 12 ظهرا.

قررنا الذهاب إلى مصر القديمة – أنا و محمد. تقابلنا في النادي و ركبنا المترو و ذهبنا.

كانت تلك أول مرة يخطو محمد داخل قطار مترو و عندما أتهمته بالطبقية كان دفاعه أنه كان يركب الميكروباص. أنا أتذكر يوم وقوعه من الحافلة و الضحكات الكثيرة بالرغم من قلق خالتي.

بدأنا بالكنيسة المعلقة و كانت هذه هي زيارتي الأولى لكنيسة في مصر. و من هناك ذهبنا إلى الكنيسة اليونانية ثم إلي المعبد اليهودي و كل الكنائس الأخرى حوله. تركنا مسجد عمرو إبن العاص إلي النهاية لأن كل الأماكن الأخرى تترك بابها مواربا من الرابعة عصرا حتى صباح اليوم التالي.

كنا نشرب من أي سبيل يعترض طريقنا و نتخلص من الماء الفاتر في الزجاجة النستلة الصغيرة لنملؤها من جديد. أخذ محمد يصور و أنا كنت أخذ خطواتي الصغيرة التي أعرفها جيدا كأنني لا أريد خلق أصغر صوت. محمد يقف في طريقي ليأخذ صورة أو أتطفل أنا بينه و بين أيقونة أو جدار.

أنقذني من التعثر في الشارع – لعبتي المفضلة – و أنا أنقذته من أجمل أربع أولاد لعب معهم في المسجد.

و بالرغم من حدوث أشياء كان من الممكن أن تعكر صفو اليوم إلا إنني لا أتذكر إلا كل الجمال الذي رأيت. كل المجهود لخلق كل تلك المساحات و الأماكن للتعبد و نحن نصل إلى المعبود من القلب أولا و في أي مكان.

أذهلتني كل تلك المسافات التي يأخذها الناس للجلوس في ظلال جامع عمرو أو عند مزار مار جرجس و كم الإيمان إنني سنشفى و سيكون كل شيء على ما يرام.

بعدما ذهبنا من ساحة المسجد قررنا الطريق الأفضل للوصول إلى الجامعة لنستمع إلى رضوى أسامة.

وصلنا و جلسنا.

كنت أرى دوللي تفعل شيء جديد عليها و هذا يبهجني دوما. و كانت كالعادة جميلة و متماسكة بالرغم من قلقها. و كنت أستمع إلى رضوى للمرة الأولى تقول أشياء اعرفها لكنني أنساها معظم الوقت. و كنت أغمز لمحمد – الذي تفرقت عنه في الولادة كما قال - من بعيد. و أجلس بجانب ثلاثة من أجمل الرجال الذي عرفتهم هذا العام – طبيب تشفيني ضحكته و ممثل يبهجني وجوده دائما و زميلي في عشق هدى جندي الذي أكون دائما ممتنة لوجوده.

كنت أجلس في الصف الأخير و أرى نهى الجميلة و لون شعرها الأحمر الجديد الذي أتى مع مرحلة جديدة و أسمعها تقول لرضوى أنها موضوع فصل من فصول كتابها الجديد عن نساء أقوياء و كنت أفكر رضوى تستحق فصل جميل مثلها.

تطعمنا أستاذتنا نادية جندي دوما لكنني أفكر و أنا أكل السابلية الشيكولاتة الذي احبه كثيرا أننا كبرنا على حبها و ليس البيتزا و الباتون ساليه.

بعد الندوة ذهبت لأجلس في مجلس سحر و جمال لم أكن أعرف بوجوده. ربما كانت بروفة عرض لكل من كان هناك لكنني شعرت بأمتنان كبير لوجودي وسطهن. جميلات و مشرقات و مليئات بالنور.

تخيلتها في السبعين و ضحكت من قلبي لأن من يعرف الحب مثلها سيصل إلى السبعين في جمال لا يعرفه الكثيرون.

حتى مريم كانت معي بالرغم من بعدها – أميال و أميال بالأمريكاني. لكن شمعها كان في قلبي.

ذهبت إلى المنزل بعد موعدي لكنني كنت صغيرة و مكتملة كما قالت نهى و تذكرت احتضانها لي قبل رحيلها و وعدها بيوم لنا.

ولدت يوم جمعة و أنا لا أحب هذا اليوم. أحببته لوقت قصير عندما كنت أقضيه في جمعية النهضة الجيزويت من 2 إلى 6 مع أشخاص ملئوا حياتي بحب يغرق القاهرة ثلاث مرات و ليس مرة واحدة.

الجمعة التي تلت الخميس 21 أكتوبر كانت أوضح بكثير. كنت خفيفة بالرغم من الحزن الذي ملأني. لكنني كنت أرتدي لوني المفضل و كنت أجلس في مسجد أحبه كثيرا. فعلت ما قالته رضوى – ذهبت لنفسي و مع نفسي و هذه كانت المرة الأولى.

وشوشني الحمام بحكايات لا أعرفها و كان صوته بلسم على آلمي و ضحكت من كل قلبي و أصابعي التي أحبها كثيرا. أشتريت لنفسي هدية لأنني أحب زينب كثيرا. و وجدت ريشة لعلي – تشبه و تذكرني به و هو لا يعرف ماذا يفعل بها كما لا أعرف أنا ماذا أفعل بكل ما أشعر به – و أستطعت أن أعطيها إياها قبل إنتهاء اليوم. قبّلت قلبه بكل ما بداخلي لأنني لا أعرف غير ذلك – و حملت ريشتي معي – خفيفة مثلي.

الشفاء كالعبادة – يبدأ من القلب – و يحدث في أي مكان و يأتي من حيث لا نعرف.

و الحب ريشة أحملها معي – قصيرة و تشبهنني و ريشة أخرى معه.

أما النور فهو نسيم من النيل يأتي من نافذة في المنيل و أقدام حافية بأصابع جميلة – حتى أصابع قدمي - و كوب من الشاي لم أريد الإنتهاء منه و تدوينة بدون أي مرارة.

يجعلني كل هذا أفكر إن كتاب نهى سيكون كبير جدا و لن ينتهى أبدا و اسأل من سيكتب الفصل عن نهى محمود؟
